Following is an excerpt:
Robert Wanerman, member of the firm Epstein Becker Green and a former assistant counsel in HHS' Office of General Counsel, questioned the overall effectiveness of the anti-fraud efforts, including how HHS is working with state officials.
"Looking at the whole ecosystem of fraud and abuse, how are they working with the U.S. attorney's offices?" he asked. "What's happening in their workings with the various state Medicare Fraud Control Units? There's supposed to be a very tight relationship between HHS and the state Medicaid Fraud Control Unit ... is it a continuation of these really well- established programs?" He also noted that reorganization efforts at HHS have cut the number of regional general counsel offices from 10 to four.
